The coaches and members at Achieve Gym like to think that they are a part of something a bit special. As with any gym people come along looking for somewhere that they can improve their fitness, maybe get a bit stronger, a bit leaner, a bit faster.

What they find is a place where people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities train together, each with their own goals in mind but as part of a close knit yet welcoming group where everyone is encouraged to try things that they may never have considered themselves capable of.

All sessions at Achieve are coach led, ensuring that all the members learn the proper form and correct technique before loading the exercises or moving on to more challenging progression.

“In March I was told I needed heart bypass surgery. I’d been keeping pretty fit and decided to keep it going under the supervision of Tanya and Guy. By the time of the operation in August I’d been doing the flexibility sessions and some bodyweight sessions. When I was assessed for the operation, I felt in really good shape thanks to the regular gym classes and a change in my diet to plant-based food.

Ten weeks after the operation I returned to the gym doing mainly flexibility to the upper body and some light cardio work to increase the heart rate. I’m really enjoying being back and making gradual improvements to my strength and flexibility.”

My strength, my mental fortitude, my friendship group, my attitude about diet. I’ve made many new relationships with likeminded people, I’ve walked many miles, I’ve started climbing and become proficient in belaying (with aspirations towards learning more skills, to keep up with my friends). The gym is about much more than ‘just’ getting stronger and more flexible. It’s about opening your mind to other possibilities, it’s about networking for unexpected work opportunities, it’s about connecting with similar beings, with whom you can have a good laugh with, but also bare your soul to. It also provides more people to go out for brunch, lunch, or dinner with (and I’m all about that!)
I’m not sure if other gym environments offer this sort of camaraderie and inclusion, but I don’t want to go to other gyms. Achieve has my kind of people. Praise be to Tanya (and Guy, I guess 😉 ).
